Joan Albert Amargós
(Barcelona, 1950- )

The composer, clarinetist, pianist and conductor Joan Albert Amargós, has composed an important number of chamber and symphonic works. The composer has also worked in film, theater and dance. His work as arranger and orchestrator in various fields of music highlights his aesthetic versatility. His production covers all genres, including the role of arranger and composer in the world of jazz and flamenco. He has won the prize for the best arranger in Spain on seven occasions, awarded by the Music Academy. He has been recognized with several awards: first prize for contemporary jazz composition, Premio Altavoz, National Music Prize of the Generalitat of Catalonia, City of Barcelona Award, Prize for the best author of classical music at the 2008 Music Awards, etc. With the work Northern Concerto, included on the CD Movements, he was nominated for the 2007 Grammy Awards in the category of best contemporary music composer.

Amargós's aesthetic postulate is faithful to the natural evolution of art, using in his compositions an extended harmony resulting from the use of a very elaborate melodic counterpoint. He is a great connoisseur of flamenco music, which has served as the basis for some of his compositions, where there is always a distinctly Mediterranean light and color.
